Public TLS certificates will have a 47-day maximum lifetime from March 2029.

A status card showing ‘47 days’ and ‘The maximum public TLS certificate lifetime from 15 March 2029.’

Public TLS certificates are on a much shorter clock. Under CA/Browser Forum rules, certificates issued from 15 March 2026 can last no more than 200 days. That maximum falls to 100 days on 15 March 2027 and 47 days on 15 March 2029. The forum adopted Ballot SC-081v3, and the schedule is set out in its TLS Baseline Requirements.

For a website owner, a certificate that expires can turn a normal visit into a browser security warning. As renewals become more frequent, calendars and manual dashboard work are a fragile way to run HTTPS. Certificate automation makes replacements easier when a certificate must be changed quickly and helps your team avoid last-minute scrambling.

Try this on your site

This week, list every public HTTPS certificate you manage and check whether its issuer supports ACME. Set up ACME-based renewal and test a renewal on a non-critical host before you need it.
